GaRo, the autonomous transportation robot in the GAK Sejong data center

GaRo is a transportation robot that moves heavyweight servers and assets around the data center.

400kg at up to 2m/s

The movement of servers around the data center occurs rather frequently. This is to ensure infrastructure support is optimized for changing service demands. Heavyweight servers these days weigh up to 80kg. The size of data centers is also increasing with each day and in the data center GAK Sejong which is the size of 41 soccer fields, a round-trip from the operation wing to the server wing reaches 850m. This is why GaRo, the autonomous transportation robot, was created.

With a maximum payload capacity of 400kg, GaRo quickly moves across the data center at speeds of up to 2m/s, automating the movement of servers. It can engage the appropriate cart based on the item being transported, all on its own.

Once in the IT warehouse, it can also collaborate with SeRo, the asset management automation robot, to efficiently move equipment in and out of the warehouse.

The perfect details for interaction and autonomous driving

In a workplace where humans and robots coexist, there is a lot to consider, from safety to convenience and more. Gaze is the latest answer to these concerns. Gaze, shaped like eyes, intuitively informs the human worker of GaRo’s movement direction or status.

Sensor data for positioning, pedestrian detection, obstacle recognition, and more are used to power predictive navigation technology that regulates GaRo’s autonomous driving speed and motion. It safely slows down when there are workers nearby and travels at full speed when alone to improve transportation efficiency.

Switch! Power assist mode

Normally, GaRo moves on its own without worker intervention, but it can also be manually operated when needed. When it switches from 'autonomous robot mode' to 'power assist mode,' a human worker can take control of the steering wheel to transport items. Applied here is strength-enhancing robot technology that understands the operator's intent and allows the easy movement of heavy assets. This mode change greatly expands GaRo's task versatility.

Guidance lighting, displayed around GaRo’s bumpers, intuitively shows the robot's movement and turning radius to prevent collisions and promote worker safety.

The movement of servers in hyperscale data centers must always be fast and seamless This requires automation that minimizes human intervention. GaRo is increasingly improving data center management efficiency by autonomously moving assets and recording data in real-time, as well as collaborating with human workers or other robots.
