[Tech-terview] Why Study Natural Robot Motion?

NAVER LABS is conducting joint research on "Natural Robot Motion Generation" with Professor Choi Sung-joon and his team at Korea University Robot Intelligence Lab. The research involves making various motions with ‘AMBIDEX’ that has human-like joint structures and testing people’s responses to the motions. It aims to find out when people think a robot’s motions look natural.

One might wonder, “Aren’t robots supposed to move naturally?” This, however, is a fantasy made in sci-fi movies and animations. In fact, we have almost never encountered natural motions of robots in real life.

This is why Professor Choi has continuously emphasized the importance of this research. The day will come when all households will each own a robot, and a lot of research on natural robot motion needs to be done before then. That way, we not only get labor force, but also emotional support from the robots and even share feelings with them.

Find out what motivated Professor Choi to start this research and what kind of future he dreams about in his interview.
